ROCKFORD — The Bachman kids — DJ, Kori and Aaron — were smart. Close as siblings, and each with their own individual sense of humor.

Saturday (January 14, 2006) started as a typical night for them. Kori volunteered to drive to Rockford to pick up an ingredient needed for their mom's Sunday dinner. Her brothers decided to go along.

On the way back to their Winnebago home, the car collided with a Winnebago County sheriff's squad at Weldon Road and West State Street. Aaron, 21, and DJ, 15, died at the scene. Kori, 19, was airlifted to Rockford Memorial Hospital, where she remains in a medically induced coma. (Kori has permanent brain damage.)

Officer Boomer’s attorneys maintain the deputy was on his way to an emergency call and had the right of way at the intersection.

The Bachmans’ attorneys said Boomer was responding to a non-emergency call, did not activate his emergency lights and was traveling more than 100 mph at the time of the accident.

Deputy cleared in fatal-crash case, July 30, 2008
